Whitaker

Thank you. Thank you. Just a second, just a second. OK. Take it. OK. I wrote something down, because I thought if it would happen that I would be a little overwhelmed and I am. So, OK.

When I was a kid, the only way that I saw movies was from the backseat of my family’s car. At the drive-in. And, it wasn’t my reality to think I would be acting in movies, so receiving this honor tonight tells me that it’s possible. It is possible for a kid from east Texas, raised in South Central L.A. in Carson, who believes in his dreams, commits himself to them with his heart, to touch them, and to have them happen.

Because when I first started acting, it was because of my desire to connect to everyone. To that thing inside each of us. That light that I believe exists in all of us. Because acting for me is about believing in that connection and it’s a connection so strong, it’s a connection so deep, that we feel it. And through our combined belief, we can create a new reality.

So I want to thank my fellow believers in The Last King of Scotland. I want to thank Peter, Jeremy, Andrea, Lisa, Charles, Kevin, James McAvoy, Kerry, Stephen, Fox, DNA, Channel Four. I want to thank the people of Uganda, who helped this film have a spirit. And finally, I want to thank my mom and my dad. I want to thank my wife Keisha, my children, my ancestors, who continue to guide my steps. And God, God who believes in us all. And who’s given me this moment, in this lifetime, that I will hopefully carry to the end of my lifetime into the next lifetime. Thank you.

Suicide Girls

So I went and saw the Suicide Girl’s show last night. I’ve got to say that I wasn’t overly impressed. I don’t know what I was expecting but all I got was a titty show.

You see, by defult, I’ve a problem with pornography and such related things (ie a titty show). Because it is such a devisive issue this means that you tend to be pushed into a corner on the topic which exaggerates your feelings on the matter. I actually don’t really care but having the beliefs that I have I can only reach the logical conclusion that such things are bad. I’m certainly not anti-sex (which is how you seem to get positioned), I just think that such displays of women’s bodies are harmful to both men and women.

So I was excited about the Suicide Girls. They, I’d hoped, were going to push the envolope a bit, challenge ideas about what is beauty, what is sexy and what a woman’s body should look like. However all I saw were a bunch of girls, none bigger than about a size 10, taking their tops off. The twist? They were tattooed and play Motorhead and Peaches rather than what ever else it is that people strip to. Where’s the burlesque? Where’s the cheek, the empowerment and so on that I was promised?

As a good friend said to me, give me the Town Bikes over these girls any day of the week.

Spooky

Tonight I’ll be down at the Espy checking out DJ Spooky.

He’s a facinating guy and it’s always worth listening to what he has to say.

Check this out for example.

One for the Jungle Bunnies

It’s rare that I make it to a Drum and Bass show these days. It generally takes someone pretty big to get me on the dance floor (Roni Size, Andy C, Craze), but this makes me want to dance!

Bare Back Mounting

So I saw “Brokeback” last night. In the words of the great Bill Hicks, “snap review: piece of shit”.

You’re gay, cool, good on you. I just don’t care.

Everyone’s banging on about Heath’s character’s internal turmoil. There was no turmoil, he was a batty boy. Cool. So what?

It seems that entirely too many films that deal with homosexuality have one twist/point: they are gay. Surely in 2006 it just doesn’t matter.

However what was interesting was the audience’s reaction, which was to laugh. So unfortunately I think it is fair to say that audiences haven’t come to terms with homosexuality. I saw it at the Nova in Carlton (can’t complain about $7.50 movies on Monday nights) – latte leftie homeland apparently. And they were giggling at the more intimate moments.

I remember watching the film Head On (quite the piece of gay porn and a fantastic film). In a particularly moving part at the end, which had me nearly in tears (because my girlfriend had eaten all the pop-corn of course) someone farted – loudly and deliberately. Obviously they couldn’t deal with the tension or the homosexual themes.

I guess it just pisses me off. When it’s a bunch of fuck heads like Queer Eye for a Straight Guy who reinforce stupid stereo-types, homosexuals are fine. When they’re all frocked up and dancing down Oxford st they are fine. As soon as they are real people with real emotions and don’t fit into – often counterproductive – stereo-types then people still need to fart during the emotional bits.

I left Brokeback pissed off because it was a shit film that went for at least an hour too long. I left Head On pissed off with a society that is obviously still too immature.

Big Day Out

I can die now, I’ve seen the Stooges live. Not only did Iggy rock hard, but the whole band rocked it! I can’t be easy playing on a stage that size in front of an audience that size, but they did it effortlessly (and it’s noteworthy that I thought the White Stripes failed at it).

They were the only reason I went – I hadn’t been for years – and it was certainly worth it.

For me, the other noteworthy was MIA. She was hot stuff with an awesome back up singer. The beats were huge and MIA just oozes charisma.

I thought Henry Rollins was a bit of a let down. I’ve seen his band and his spoke word a few times and I have to say this was probably his weakest performance. He only spoke for half and hour and never really settled in. he just sort of went ‘I was hanging with Johnny Ramone the week before he died. Iggy Pop is the king of rock. Aussie music is great: go and see the Beasts of Bourbon. Make sure you vote John Howard out of office. Thank you and good night.’

No, no, thank you Hank.

I’d like to also acknowledge my crew for the day D, and R – particularly D who I basically spent the whole day with having beer drinking comps (I still can’t believe you beat me by a mouthful). You guys made a great day even better.

Desci also has her take on the day. FYI Lust for Life wasn’t a Stooges song – it was an Iggy Pop song.

Update: It’s certainly worth checking out these photos of Mr Pop.

Jello Biafra

Undoubtedly one of the biggest influences in my life has been Dead Kennedys front man, Jello Biafra.

He’s a big influence on the music I listen to and my politics. I just received in the mail his latest incarnation: Jello Biafra with the Melvins: Sieg Howdy (with some lovely artwork by Camille Rose Garcia.

Anyway I just wanted to express my extreme delight at discovering the latest update of California Uber Alles (or Kali-Fornia Uber Alles 21st Century) as it is here.

And this time it’s the Terminator that feels the wrath of JB.

Embrace him:

Send my regards to Brooklyn

…Is how Saul Williams concluded his telegram to Hip hop last night.

“not until you’ve listen to Rakim on a rocky mountain top have you heard hip hop”

God damn he was good.

i am not the son of sha-klak klak

and i be riding on the wings of eternity like
CLA CLA CLA SHA KLACK KLACK
GET ME THE FUCK OFF THIS TRACK

In short, the man is a genius. We had an onslaught of insight, prophesy, poetry and some very fat beats. I just don’t know where to begin, so I will continue with more insight from the man (I know it’s lame, but it’s my blog):

and as heart beats bring percussions
fallen trees bring repercussions
citys play upon our souls like broken drums
redrum the essence of creation from city slums
but city slums mute our drums and our drums become humdrums
cuz city slums have never been where our drums are from
just the place where our daughters and sons become
offbeat heartbeats
slaves to city streets
and hearts get broken and heartbeats stop
broken heartbeats become breakbeats for niggas to rhyme on top, but..

One of the best shows I’ve seen for a long time.
