Bloody Baby Boomers

As someone who is just about to start looking for a rental property again thisscares the hell out of me:

MELBOURNE’S rental property drought has hit crisis levels after last month’s vacancy rate fell below 1% for the first time on record. Rental accommodation in the central city has almost dwindled to zero.

For those wishing to live close to the city the situation is even more dire. The Real Estate Institute of Victoria says that, within four kilometres of the CBD, the vacancy rate dived to 0.5% last month. It was 0.6% in February last year.

And I blame baby boomers and their instance on property investment. I also blame the government for allowing baby boomers to negatively gearing which means that Baby Boomers can get a tax break for ripping me off. For fuck’s sake, it benefits investors not first home buyers. Not that would want to buy a house even if it was within my means.

Such is my dismay that I even find myself agreeing with the Institute of Public Affairs:

Alan Moran, director of the Institute of Public Affairs’ deregulation unit, said housing supply was being constrained by some action groups.

“It comes back to save-our-suburb type groups that are opposing new developments and either imposing costs on them or stopping them, so we have a shortage emerging.”

And when I agree with that bunch of looney right-wingers, the IPA, you know something must be wrong.

Moreover, property investment means less investment in Australian companies. So people, please don’t buy and investment property, buy shares in Australian companies that specialise in renewable energy and technology – preferably open source.

Nik Coppin

Well it’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival time again, and once again I’m off to see Nik Coppin.

I first saw him in Edinburgh a couple of years ago and really liked him so when he came out to Melbourne last year I made sure I caught him again.

Highly recommended. You can see all his dates etc at the Comedy Festival website: http://www.comedyfestival.com.au/

The REAL reason we use Linux

When something strange happens on my (Linux-running) laptop, I’ve been know to comment, “Yes, I love Linux”. And I do, it is better and more secure than Microsoft, but An Amazing Mind has the real reason I use Linux:

We tell people we use Linux because it’s secure. Or because it’s free, because it’s customizable, because it’s free (the other meaning), because it has excellent community support…

But all of that is just marketing bullshit. We tell that to non-Linuxers because they wouldn’t understand the real reason. And when we say those false reasons enough, we might even start to believe them ourselves.

But deep underneath, the real reason remains.

We use Linux because it’s fun!

It’s fun to tinker with your system. It’s fun to change all the settings, break the system, then have to go to recovery mode to repair it. It’s fun to have over a hundred distros to choose from. It’s fun to use the command line.

Let me say that again. It’s fun to use the command line.

No wonder non-Linuxers wouldn’t understand.

The point with us Linux fans is – we use Linux for its own sake. Sure, we like to get work done. Sure, we like to be secure from viruses. Sure, we like to save money. But those are only the side-effects. What we really like is playing with the system, poking around, and discovering completely pointless yet fascinating facts about the OS.

… also, Microsoft and facist bully boys.

I’ve been teaching myself php (and hope to launch my first site in the next few months), but I increasingly have a desire to learn a bit of C++ to help contribute to the Linux project.

And, as Vlad Dolezal, “Linux is free (as-in-speech)” and that leaves me with warm fuzzy feelings.
