Laptop Love

With a new Laptop almost visible on the horizon and the latest version of Ubuntu, Feisty Fawn, due out on 19th April, plus French Parliament announcing that it is switching to KUbuntu in June 2007 I thought I’d just point you to a few Linux-related links that I’ve found useful of late.

This Desktop Guide (pdf) is great for understanding the absolute basics of Ubuntu. It’s made me realise I may have skipped over a couple of things along the way.

DistroWatch is a fantastic web site with massive amounts of information regarding Linux distributions. It also tells me that Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution, followed by SUSE and Fedora (both of which I had very brief flirtations with) and that Ubuntu originated on the Isle of Man which no doubt explains it’s African name.

I’ve also come across this very detailed Ubuntu Starter’s guide, and this document storage facility with information on everything you could ever need to know about Ubuntu.

Finally, there is this guide to using the Terminal with all the commands etc which I hope will drastically improve my knowledge of what is going on behind the scenes on my operating system, as Linux is a terminal-based operating system (ie everything that happens on your computer is just a terminal command – see, I’m learning!).

Update: Last night I found these instructions on installing Beryl at the document storage facility I mentioned above.

Now my desktop is all 3D and spewing awesomeness where ever it goes. Can’t wait for the new laptop which will have a better graphics card etc.

Nik Coppin

One of the highlights of my 4 and a half months in Europe was the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

I think it was the first night I was there, I went to a free comedy show in a pub and saw Nic Coppin. A very funny man and all round nice guy. I got chatting to Nic afterwards and we ended up drinking together until 6 in the morning, seeing some other comedy and having a good time all round.

Anyway, turns out that Nic is in Melbourne for the Comedy Festival and you should all go and see him, he will make you laugh.
