Whitaker

Thank you. Thank you. Just a second, just a second. OK. Take it. OK. I wrote something down, because I thought if it would happen that I would be a little overwhelmed and I am. So, OK.

When I was a kid, the only way that I saw movies was from the backseat of my family’s car. At the drive-in. And, it wasn’t my reality to think I would be acting in movies, so receiving this honor tonight tells me that it’s possible. It is possible for a kid from east Texas, raised in South Central L.A. in Carson, who believes in his dreams, commits himself to them with his heart, to touch them, and to have them happen.

Because when I first started acting, it was because of my desire to connect to everyone. To that thing inside each of us. That light that I believe exists in all of us. Because acting for me is about believing in that connection and it’s a connection so strong, it’s a connection so deep, that we feel it. And through our combined belief, we can create a new reality.

So I want to thank my fellow believers in The Last King of Scotland. I want to thank Peter, Jeremy, Andrea, Lisa, Charles, Kevin, James McAvoy, Kerry, Stephen, Fox, DNA, Channel Four. I want to thank the people of Uganda, who helped this film have a spirit. And finally, I want to thank my mom and my dad. I want to thank my wife Keisha, my children, my ancestors, who continue to guide my steps. And God, God who believes in us all. And who’s given me this moment, in this lifetime, that I will hopefully carry to the end of my lifetime into the next lifetime. Thank you.

Nicotine

In yet another victory for Linux, I’ve just come across Nicotine. It’s Soulseek for Linux.

I’ve been using KTorrent for all my Bit Torrent needs and I’m particularly happy with it but I haven’t been able to find a non-torrent peer to peer program that doesn’t require a degree in computers to get working, until now. Nicotine – based on preliminary testing – is pretty well identical to Soulseek.

So far I’ve converted two friends to Ubuntu and a third one is showing promising signs with phrases like “my god Windows is the biggest piece of shit I’ve ever come across and it’s ruined my life”. His biggest problem (other than programs being unstable and crashing for no particular reason on a semi-regular basis) is that when ever you run a peer-to-peer program Windows cracks it after a few ports are opened and just stops any port from opening after that.

Why? It is a type of draconian digital rights management that Microsoft loves. Punish the sinner not the sin. Because peer-to-peer software could possibility be used to pirate material they punish those that use it. There are other, smarter ways prevent piracy but instead they limit peoples access to highly democratic file-sharing software to further reinforce their monopoly.

(I know my rants are getting a little preachy but what I’m hoping to do is let others know about the programs that I’m discovering for Ubuntu and Linux generally in the hope that it will be useful to people who have recently started using Linux like me.)

All things Linux

WEll, I’m back to full time work (albeit between two jobs) and am reminded, strangely, that full time work pretty well sucks arse.

However I am still using Ubuntu (Linux) which makes me particularly happy and it is going stronger than ever – discovering new wonderfullness every day.

Like yesterday when I discovered this blog post: http://lifehacker.com/software/ubuntu/hack-attack-top-10-ubuntu-apps-and-tweaks-195437.php, which ponted me to Amarok which I’d suggest is about the best music player I’ve come across – yes, even better than that iTunes piece of shit. Not sure if it’s available for PC, nor do I care.

So I’ve decided, in a futile attempt to convert others to Linux, that I would start to point out these things sorts of revelations to people.

The other one I recently came across was this simple way to mount an NTFS (Windows) file system. I do still have a dual boot with Windows XP as an option so it can be handy if you’ve still got files on your windows system.

A Job

I don’t know about all you slackers but I know I’m employed.

Oh yeah!

Plus, I don’t have to sell my soul after all.

Good times.

Shift Happens

I realise that all I seem to be doing is posting YouTube video’s at the moment but what are you going to do – at least it’s more interesting than hearing about how I’m still under employed.

Anyway, thanks to Zero for this one:

U2 and web 2.0

Well I seem to be getting in trouble for some post I’ve written in the past month or so. In order to keep thinks in order I thought I’d point you to this new U2 film clip which is particularly amazing (I think):

I’ve never been much of a U2 fan (still aren’t) but it must have been a nightmare getting the rights to all that footage to put this together but the result is amazing. What is also amazing is that they obviously have a good grasp of web 2.0 and have use this and posted the film clip on YouTube etc.
