A bit of a tweek

Well, I’ve been figuring out this CSS stuff and am certainly getting better at it. So I’ve stylised this blog a bit so it looks more like the general Goonanism site.

Please let me know what you think. It’s not 100% finished as I’ve still go a few things I want to tweek but it’s well on its way.

..tis a sad day for the blogsphere.

First this, then this. What’s the world coming to, these are both blogs that I enjoy so much. Mind you, it’s almost by definition, good to know when to stop and I need to remind myself that these people aren’t hear solely to get me through my working day. It always take me a while to remove people from my blog roll as I’m in disbelief.

This was also a rather sobering reminder.

…and another thing

You know what else shits me? U2.

I’ve never liked them. They’re commercial, “radio friendly” and uninteresting. And that’s ok, really it is. What shits me is that it’s taken as a given that they are “the biggest rock band in the world”. Who decides this and on what criteria? What does this say about other bands?

Yes, they are very popular but are they really THAT popular? And if they are then shouldn’t we call them “the most popular rock band in the world”? It’s a far more realistic and objective description.

Someone said to me a little while back that they had tickets to the concert and that they were really excited about it. I said that I thought that was nice but that I didn’t care much for U2, to which they replied “Yeah, I’m not a huge fan either but it will just be great to see the biggest rock band in the world”.

When I don’t understand something it frustrates me. This “U2 phenomenon” frustrates me.

Doughnuts

For some reason this makes me happy:

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc today said it expected to report lower revenue in the fourth quarter and all of 2006 and also said it expected to post a loss for both periods, based on preliminary data.

So, where to then?

For the benefit of MadHatter, Ali, Kara and anyone else who’s interested, I thought I’d just quickly outline my time-line and commitments while I’m overseas.

I’ve set up a Travel Wiki so that I can track a whole lot of things. This would not unreasonably be call a “complete fucking wank” but what are you going to do. I also encourage you to fill in some details if you have any recommendations for where I should go.

So, key itinerary items:

  • Depart Melbourne, 14 June at, landing in Singapore at late arvo and kicking it with Ad Lib
  • 21:10 on the 16th June I fly to Rome (via Zurich)
  • Then I’m footloose and fancy free for about 4 months, going where I please.
  • I fly out of London 18 October to Thailand, hoping desperately that Ali and Kara‘s wedding party is prior to this date. I’ll probably spend all of October in GB.
  • Land in Thailand on the 19th October to attend the World Social Forum
  • Home 25 October, broke.

Now I was planning on catching the Train everywhere and pre-booking a Eurail pass but I said this to a couple of seasoned travelers last night and both of them said “don’t be crazy, $1500 is too much”. Anyone got any thoughts on the matter.

Can you see that I’m shitting myself about leaving?

The first plane out of Sydney’s almost gone

Ladies and gentlemen. This time is drawing near.

I have just resigned after five and a half long years of service at OurCommunity and bought a ticket to ride.

I won’t say I’m not sad about leaving OC, but it is certainly time to move on and my sadness is countered by me peeing my pants with excitement about the big wide world.

I fly out on 14 June and my last day of work is Friday 9 June. It’s still a couple of months away and I’ve a feeling that time will take for ever.

I’m going to change my countdown timer so that it is looking at my departure, fuck Nathan’s Hotdog eating competition.

Suicide Girls

So I went and saw the Suicide Girl’s show last night. I’ve got to say that I wasn’t overly impressed. I don’t know what I was expecting but all I got was a titty show.

You see, by defult, I’ve a problem with pornography and such related things (ie a titty show). Because it is such a devisive issue this means that you tend to be pushed into a corner on the topic which exaggerates your feelings on the matter. I actually don’t really care but having the beliefs that I have I can only reach the logical conclusion that such things are bad. I’m certainly not anti-sex (which is how you seem to get positioned), I just think that such displays of women’s bodies are harmful to both men and women.

So I was excited about the Suicide Girls. They, I’d hoped, were going to push the envolope a bit, challenge ideas about what is beauty, what is sexy and what a woman’s body should look like. However all I saw were a bunch of girls, none bigger than about a size 10, taking their tops off. The twist? They were tattooed and play Motorhead and Peaches rather than what ever else it is that people strip to. Where’s the burlesque? Where’s the cheek, the empowerment and so on that I was promised?

As a good friend said to me, give me the Town Bikes over these girls any day of the week.

Punk

I’ve always sighted Punk Rock as a major factor in my political awakening.

Now I know why.

A few tid bits

May of you will be interested in this press release:

The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) today granted bridging visas to the final two athletes from the Sierra Leone Commonwealth Games team.

All 14 athletes who were listed by their team as missing and whose Games accreditation was withdrawn have now been located and are lawfully in the community.

I’ve got other exciting news that I was hoping to be able to tell you by about now but it will have to wait another day or so.

However this is quite different to the other news that I’ve been holding back and can now announce. One of my best friends is getting married, god bless her! Yep, she’s all in love and shit and I couldn’t be happier for her. I don’t think she reads this but if you do then let me tell you once again that I love you more than life itself!!

Nathans grows!

Competitive Eating Enthusiasts (such as myself) will be pleased to hear of the growth in the sport:

The Nathan’s circuit received a huge response this year, and there are no spaces left at any of the qualifiers. Even the standby lists are full!

Keep your eye on my countdown timer on the right for the grand finale!

That is all.
