War on corrupt police shackled – Crime
The Age today reported:
Vital information on corruption in the Victoria Police is being withheld from investigators because of a Federal Government ruling restricting the use of phone taps.Senior police have decided not to pass on any intelligence to Victoria’s recently created independent Office of Police Integrity if the information has been gathered through phone taps.
The problem has arisen from a controversial Federal Government decision last year to deny the new anti-corruption agency phone intercept powers. It also cannot be provided with transcripts or information from police if derived from intercepts.
Is it just me or this this strange behavior for a federal government that is trying to introduce the ASIO Bill that will increase surveillance and further limit civil liberties. It seems almost comical.
